The sure-thing spot: Pont de Gau (near Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer)
If you want near-guaranteed views, go to the Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau. Trails and viewing hides loop through lagoons; you can linger until sunset even when the reception closes—perfect for silhouettes. From Oct 1–Mar 31 the reception is 10:00–17:00. (Parc Ornithologique)
If you have a car, the best thing is to go there: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Xcs6YwJ1VDSckkh86. Please note that the park is open all night. If you get inside before 6 pm, you can stay as long as you want. (Thank you, Cedric, for this tip.)
Why October works: cooler days, active feeding, and low, honeyed light that makes your photos look like you hired a cinematographer. (The birds are present year-round in the Camargue.) (Les Oiseaux de Camargue)
A pink-on-pink bonus: Aigues-Mortes salt pans
Pair your flamingos with rose-tinted salins at Aigues-Mortes. The visitor Petit Train runs a ~1h15 circuit through shimmering pink ponds where you often spot birds flying over. Check hours/booking before you go. (visitesalinsdecamargue.com)
Even closer to Marseille: Étang de Berre & Salins du Lion
Short on time? Keep it local at the Réserve ornithologique des Salins du Lion on the edge of Étang de Berre (near the airport). Smaller scale, but greater flamingos are among regular sightings year-round. Great for an after-work wander if you’re Marseille-based. (Birdingplaces.eu)
Getting there (easy planning)
-
From Aix/Marseille to Pont de Gau: plan ~1h30–1h40 by car in normal traffic (≈120 km from Marseille). Public-transport combos exist but are long; a car day-trip is simplest. (Rome2Rio)
-
Best time of day: early morning or late afternoon for active birds and soft light; you can exit at sundown at Pont de Gau. Bring a light windbreaker. (Parc Ornithologique)
Field notes we wish we’d known
-
Etiquette: stay on paths, keep voices low, and give space—these are wild birds protected under EU and French law. (Les Oiseaux de Camargue)
-
Why they’re pink: it’s the carotenoids in their diet (algae, brine shrimp). Juveniles start grey; the color deepens with time—easy to see in October flocks. (Encyclopedia Britannica)
-
Weather & mozzies: after rain + warmth, bring repellent; a breezy day keeps it pleasant.
-
Big-picture note: the Camargue is magical—and vulnerable. Rising seas and erosion shape local debates about how to protect this landscape. Be gentle, tread lightly. (Le Monde.fr)
Sample day from Aix (save this)
-
Leave after breakfast; coffee stop in Arles.
-
Pont de Gau 10:30–12:30 (short loop first, longer loop if birds are farther out). (Birdingplaces.eu)
-
Lunch at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer; beach stroll.
-
Optional Aigues-Mortes salins train mid-afternoon for pink-water panoramas. (visitesalinsdecamargue.com)
-
Return to Pont de Gau for golden hour, exit at sundown, then home.
